As an Industrial Designer, I specialize in designing permanent works for Public Art, collaborating closely with artists, engineers, fabricators, architects, landscape architects and city planners to ensure the rigorous requirements for built work in the public realm are met—while honouring artistic vision. From conceptualization to fabrication and installation, I oversee all project phases, utilizing effective communication and proficient tools to produce detailed technical drawings and 3D models. Through these experiences, I've gained a deep appreciation for the complexities and collaborative nature of design.
Boardwalk design collaboration for Fireweed Fields, Holly Schmidt. Designed in collaboration with Holly Schmidt. My collaborative process with Holly involved drawing on the site with string to delineate the boardwalk’s footprint in close relation to the site. I then translated these full scale spatial drawings into a detailed set for fabrication, with emphasis on maintaining the irregular quality of initial string drawings. Fabrication by Terris Projects. Materials: reclaimed cedar, metal mesh. Location: Belkin Art Gallery, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. Canada. Completion date: 2021
Lily Tree, by artist Devon Knowles; detail view and installation photos. Designed in collaboration with the artist, fabricator Carvel Creative and Aspect Engineers. Material: mild steel, painted. Location: Richmond B.C., Canada. Completion date: 2021
Family: Five Figures for a Triangle by Lyse Lemieux. Recent photos of completed work, and images from detail design fabrication. Designed in collaboration with the artist, Carvel Creative and Aspect Engineers. Material: aluminum, stainless steel, dye sublimation. Locaton: Vancouver, BC, Canada. Completion date: 2021.
Adrift by Rebecca Belmore and Osvaldo Yero. This was my second opportunity to support the design and development of a public art commission for Belmore and Yero’s public art practice. With both projects, much of the focus was on designing a process that enabled them to work with organic, unpredictable forms that met the structural and fabrication requirements needed for a suspended, permanent artwork in the public realm. Materials: cast stainless steel, translucent cast resin, suspension hardware. Location: Vancouver Public Library Central Branch. Completion date: 2019.
Houseplanters public art concept by Vanessa Kwan. Excerpts from a series of concept renders and drawings developed for Vanessa Kwan. Pulling from small maquettes, images, sketches and discussions with Vanessa, I used 3D modelling, rendering and image editing software to communicate the concept. See Communication Design section for more.
